Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections have been used for years in orthopedics and dermatology for treating injured areas of tissue. Platelet-rich plasma consists of plasma, or the liquid part of the blood, and platelets, which are a type of blood cell that plays a vital role in healing within the body.

Platelet-rich plasma is simply blood that contains more platelets than usual to trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration or healing in the targeted area.

When used in the vaginal area, PRP can improve the following conditions:

  • Difficulty becoming aroused
  • Trouble reaching orgasm
  • Painful intercourse
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Fecal incontinence

Who is a Candidate?

Healthy women who are seeking a non-surgical solution to vaginal atrophy can often benefit from PRP injections. Individuals with certain blood and bleeding disorders are not candidates for this treatment. For more information regarding this treatment and candidacy, patients are advised to schedule a consultation.

The PRP Treatment

The PRP treatment is a multi-step process. First, a tube of a patient’s blood are taken and placed into a machine called a centrifuge. This machine will spin the blood to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood components. These activated platelets are then placed into a syringe and injected into the targeted body area. The PRP will promote collagen and elastin production inside the vagina and around the clitoris, leading to easier stimulation, improved vaginal hydration, and more. The entire treatment process typically takes about one hour to complete.

What to Expect After PRP

There is no downtime required following PRP injections, however, mild redness, swelling, or numbness may occur for the first couple of days. An immediate increase in the volume of the vaginal tissues will take place, leading to noticeable results with time. The formation of new collagen and elastin leads to skin thickening and tightening for about 14 months. In order to maintain results, patients should undergo a touch-up treatment about a year after their initial treatment.
