Perineoplasty

What is a Perineoplasty?

Perineoplasty is a procedure designed to restore pelvic floor support.  The pelvic floor can become stretched and distorted due to injuries, particularly those associated with the vaginal delivery and perinatal processes. Treatment may include surgical repair of lax muscles in the opening of the vagina.

Possible symptoms associated with perineum damage include:

  • Vaginal itching
  • Vaginal laxity
  • Vaginismus
  • Vulvar pain (vulvar vestibulitis)
  • Incontinence
  • Aesthetic issues
  • And more

Who is a Candidate?

Women may benefit from a perineoplasty if they are exhibiting any of these signs or symptoms:

  • The presence of unsightly scars after sewing or rupture of the perineum
  • Dissatisfaction during sexual intercourse
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Soreness when touching the perineum or wearing tight clothing
  • Recurrent vaginal infections
  • Difficulty emptying the bowels or prolapse of the reproductive organs
  • Weakness of the perineum

However, patients should not receive this treatment if they are pregnant, have abnormal pap smear results, have an active vaginal infection, have vascular blemishes, have been diagnosed with coagulation disorders, or have cancer. The best way to determine candidacy is to schedule a consultation.

The Perineoplasty Procedure

Perineoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under local or general anesthesia. Minimally invasive surgical techniques will be used to allow faster healing. Excess skin will be removed and the deeper layers of muscle repaired. Then, the edges of the wound will be brought back together with stitches.

Recovery

During the first days following perineoplasty, patients may experience pressure, pain, and a burning sensation at the surgical site. Swelling will also occur for the first couple of weeks. The skin usually heals without complications and there are no scars. Individuals should take care to refrain from sexual activity for six weeks following surgery to allow for optimal healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for perineoplasty to heal?

After the procedure, the perineum can take about two weeks to heal, but you typically need 4-6 weeks before you resume sexual activity or insert a tampon.

What is perineoplasty?

Perineoplasty is a procedure used to restore the shape of the vagina. It could have been damaged due to injuries or due to childbirth. The surgery can include removing adhesions or lesions in the perineum or restoring the muscles in the vagina opening.

What are the benefits of perineoplasty?

Some of the benefits you may experience after a perineoplasty include improved sexual satisfaction, restored function, and a narrower vaginal opening.

Does perineoplasty make you tighter?

Yes. Perineoplasty can tighten the opening of the vagina, but it doesn’t affect the diameter of the vaginal canal or any internal part of the vagina.

Is perineal surgery painful?

Because anesthesia is used during the procedure, you won’t feel any pain at all. Afterward, you may feel some discomfort, but your provider will provide pain medication to help.

What to expect after a perineoplasty?

After a perineoplasty, you will likely experience some swelling and discomfort for the first few days. Pain relievers and ice can be used to help with both. You’ll also want to limit your activities for at least the first four weeks with no heavy lifting or strenuous activities. You’ll also need to keep the area dry and clean and wear a sanitary pad if you have any vaginal bleeding.
