Botox®

Botox® Cosmetic (botulinum toxin type A) is an incredibly popular cosmetic treatment performed millions of times each year in the United States. It has a variety of cosmetic benefits, and when injected by a knowledgeable and experienced healthcare provider, it can effectively smooth facial wrinkles. We offer botulinum toxin treatment at Tideline Center for Health & Aesthetics.

WHAT IS BOTOX®?

Botox® is an injectable neurotoxin used to smooth dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form as a result of repeated facial movements such as squinting, frowning, and smiling. Botox® works by temporarily blocking nerve impulses to the targeted facial muscles, causing them to relax. This results in the softening of wrinkles and lines for a more youthful appearance.

This prescription medicine has been FDA-approved for cosmetic purposes for many decades and has been used for medical conditions such as overactive bladder, cervical dystonia, excessive sweating, chronic migraine, and much more for even longer. It’s one of the most tried and tested cosmetic treatments available and does not require any surgery, anesthesia, or downtime, making it an ideal way to achieve a more refreshed appearance.

WHAT CAN BOTOX® TREAT?

Botox® is commonly used to treat the following areas:

  • Forehead wrinkles and creases
  • Glabellar lines
  • Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • A “cobblestoned” look to the chin
  • Downturned corners of the mouth
  • And more

Botox® injections are commonly paired with other aesthetic options like dermal fillers. Together, these two options can smooth lines and wrinkles and restore youthful volume to the face. Your injector will discuss the option of adding fillers to your botulinum toxin injections for a more complete cosmetic result.

Who is a Candidate?

Healthy adults ages 18 and older who are looking to soften the look of dynamic wrinkles can often benefit from Botox® treatment. However, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a bleeding or nerve disorder, or have a skin infection at the treatment site should not receive this treatment. During a consultation, our providers will review your complete medical history to screen for any possible allergic reactions or medical conditions that may interfere with the safety and effectiveness of Botox® injections. The best way to determine candidacy is to schedule a consultation.

Botox® Treatment

Prior to treatment, a consultation is necessary for proper evaluation of the treatment area. Once a treatment plan has been determined, Botox® can be injected in the office. A topical numbing cream will be offered, though many patients find this unnecessary, as the needles used to inject are very small. The provider will inject the Botox® into the predetermined areas, such as between the brows for frown lines. An appointment can take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to complete, depending on the number of treatment areas.

What to Expect After Botox®

There is no downtime required following Botox® injections, so patients can return to regular activities as soon as they wish. However, for best results, we recommend avoiding alcohol consumption and spending prolonged periods in the sun for 24-48 hours after treatment. It’s also best to avoid bending over or lying down for the first four hours after treatment, as well as exercise for the first 24 hours. Avoiding blood thinners before and after treatment can help reduce the incidence of bruising. You may have some minor redness and sensitivity at the injection sites, but these side effects fade quickly.

Severe side effects such as flu-like symptoms, blurred vision, breathing problems, and trouble swallowing are exceptionally rare, especially when injections of botulinum toxin are performed by a reputable and qualified injector. You will review the risks and benefits of Botox® injections during your appointment with our team.

Botox® results can last anywhere from three to six months. We recommend returning for regular touch-up appointments to maintain your results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Botox last?

Botox typically lasts between 3-4 months, but it can last for up to 6 months.

What to expect from Botox for the first time?

Botox uses very thin needles for the injection. While numbing is an option, most people do not feel much discomfort from the injection. Additionally, after treatment, you will not see immediate results. It can take a week or more to see results. Botox also does not last forever. You may want to schedule appointments every 3-4 months as the injection starts to wear off.

How much Botox should you get the first time?

Your doctor will recommend a certain amount of Botox depending on the area being treated. The bigger the area, the more units they will need to use. But typically, for the first time, they will use just enough to have an effect as your body is not used to Botox yet.

What does Botox do?

Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles, stopping them from contracting or tensing up. When used on the face, it relaxes the muscles that cause frown lines or other wrinkles and by doing so, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How long does it take for Botox to work?

You may start to see results within a few days, but it typically takes several weeks before you will see the full results.

What are the 3 most popular areas for Botox to treat?

The forehead, between the eyes, and on the side of the eyes, known as crow’s feet are the three most popular areas.

What is the recovery process for Botox?

There is no downtime or recovery process for Botox. You can go back to your normal routine after the procedure. That said, you will want to avoid alcohol use, strenuous exercise, and sleeping on the treated area for at least a day or two.
